Survey: Fewer Americans feeling less secure financially

December 28, 2010 - A new report shows that compared to last year, more Americans might have the financial confidence they need to pack their moving boxes in the near future.

In a sample of 2,331 Americans, 42 percent currently feel less secure about their personal financial situation than they did a year ago, according to a Harris poll. While that figure did represent two of every five Americans, it was lower than the share of adults who said they felt that way in 2009, which was 56 percent. Thirty-six percent of respondents this month said they were in the same economic situation a year ago, while 19 percent said they feel more secure.

Regardless of their feelings on the subject, most Americans agreed that a poor jobs market made it imperative for them to save their money and cut back on debt. A large majority - 63 percent - rated their local employment market as poor, and most adults said they would make efforts to rid themselves of debt and improve their retirement and overall savings.

A strong reserve of savings can especially help consumers who are planning on moving in the near future. A report this summer from Trulia.com found that 47 percent of buyers would purchase a new home if they had enough savings to afford a down payment.
