Tips for DIY moves

October 20, 2010 - Many people moving, particularly apartment or condo dwellers, may not have a lot to move and don't want to pay the cost of having movers. Self-service moving might be your answer.

U-Haul offers some advice to those starting the relocation process. They suggest people reserve their moving vehicle two to four weeks in advance; rates may even be lower for early booking, according to the Missouri newspaper, the Liberty Tribune.

Chuck Marshment, an independent U-Haul owner in Missouri, told the newspaper, "Plan ahead. Make sure you have enough boxes, materials and help.”

U-Haul also recommends designating a room in the house or apartment as the "packing room" where a little packing can be done each day.

Since many people move on the weekends, a way to beat the crowds may be to move during the week.

Eco-friendly movers might try to seek out moving companies that offer give-and-take programs where people can donate their moving boxes after they are done for others to use.

When moving day arrives, it might save a lot of time and energy to enlist the help of friends and family to carry the boxes and pack the moving vehicle.
