Tips for moving into a smaller home

August 1, 2012 - Regardless of the reason for downsizing, moving into a smaller home can be stressful, especially if you have a large family.

When moving boxes into a smaller house, homeowners may need to make the most of small spaces that may have previously been used as a home office or second living space. This is ideal for younger kids who likely won't notice a difference and who spend a lot of time outside of their living space.

Large families who are moving into a home with fewer bedrooms may have to ask kids to share their new living space. To make this less invasive, parents can offer to put up a room divider, while bunk beds can also help when trying to utilize space.

While getting rid of items before a moving company comes to pack can help prevent a new house from becoming cluttered, families should look at all possible storage spaces, including attics, basements and even corners before selling all their stuff. Shelves can also be installed to maximize floor space by eliminating the need for bookshelves and side tables.
