California wants more disclosure on pet insurance

June 7, 2010 - Pet-loving consumers moving to California may soon have an added benefit - more disclosure when it comes to pet insurance.

Lawmakers in California are trying to pass a piece of legislation that would require health insurance companies selling coverage for animals to provide greater disclosure. Sacramento Assemblyman Dave Jones is sponsoring the bill. The State Assembly passed the bill last week and now it is waiting for the Senate's approval.

If the bill becomes law, insurance company websites will have to clearly state the benefit schedules, coverage limits, and limitations - including preexisting conditions, Jones' office said. The goal of this legislation is for consumers to be able to accurately compare a variety of pet insurance options.

Jones said that "the worst possible time to realize that the pet insurance that you have paid premiums on for years does not actually cover the full cost of veterinary care is when your beloved pet needs emergency or high cost care. This bill will take important steps to allow transparency in the marketing of pet insurance."

In addition to insurance, consumers should speak with their pet's veterinarian about what precautions should be taken to avoid illness and injury.
