Lessees, homeowners can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

January 8, 2010 - Individuals who are planning to relocate may want to ensure their new homes will be equipped with carbon monoxide detectors, as some lawmakers are placing increased emphasis on the dangers of this type of poisoning.

Detectors may not be able to pick up on the colorless, odorless gas unless they are placed in certain areas of the home, such as fireplaces, attached garages or near appliances that burn fossil fuels, the Gaston Gazette reports.

The threat posed by carbon monoxide has prompted legislators in North Carolina to pass a law that requires all landlords to install detectors in their properties, according to the media outlet.

Eric Hendrix, the fire marshal for Gaston County, told the news source inhalation of the gas can cause "flu-like symptoms" and put renters into a potentially fatal sleep if they "get enough exposure in a short amount of time."

The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is especially dangerous during winter months, when residents increase their use of devices such as wood stoves, gas fireplaces and kerosene heaters, dBusinessNews reports.
