Bedbugs becoming a nuisance nationwide

September 15, 2010 - Relocating families are advised to stay on the lookout for rising bed bug infestations across the country.

According to MarketWatch, 95 percent of the nearly 1,000 American and foreign pest management companies that were surveyed by the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky said that they have encountered a bedbug problem within the past year. Ten years ago, only 25 percent of respondents had reported bedbug infestations, said the report.

Additionally, 76 percent of respondents said that the microscopic creatures were the toughest to treat - harder than cockroaches, termites and ants, said the report. While the bugs do not carry disease, they can become a nuisance for homeowners, especially those that have recently moved into a new home.

"The majority of people don't have bed bugs," Missy Henriksen, spokeswoman for the NPMA, told the news source. "But it's such a difficult and challenging pest to eliminate and can cause such angst."

A bedbug problem could complicate matters for someone who is moving, as an infestation might delay their home sale. MarketWatch advised that homeowners look for telltale signs of bed bugs, such as unusual reddish or brown stains on bedsheets and furniture.

Moving families may want to consider avoiding locations with large bedbug populations. Pest control company Terminix reported that New York is the city it has treated the most for bedbugs.
