Yakima, Washington

Yakima is located in South Central Washington where the Naches and Yakima Rivers join. The 300 days of sunshine and breathtaking sights beg those who experience it to take advantage of the wonderful outdoor activities. Included are camping, fishing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, snow boarding and boating to mention a few. Those moving to Yakima will find community members and leaders that are proud of their achievements and stand firm in the commitment to work together to keep Yakima a beautiful and thriving community.

History:
In 1805, Lewis and Clark led the first American expedition into the region. Their announcement of the abundant wildlife and rich soil of the valley attracted trappers and homesteaders. Throughout the 1850 and 60, increasing settlers moved into the Yakima Valley, which lead to disputes between settlers and Native tribes. This would result in the Yakama Indian Wars of 1855. In 1858, an Army garrison was established at Ft. Simcoe. And United States Cavalry fought against the tribes Ultimately Yakama Indians were moved to a reservation south of Yakima. The city was incorporated as Yakima City on December 1, 1883. In 1884, Northern Pacific Railway Company established a station four miles west and moved over one hundred buildings from Yakima to the new site free. The new settlement was called "North Yakima." The reason behind this was because the Northern Pacific could not obtain the concession to operation. In 1889 The Women's Christian Temperance Union organized the first reading room, water mainlines are installed and the first local telephone company is established. By 1890, Electrical utility services were available. In 1907, the Carnegie Library building opened through the generosity of Andrew Carnegie's $10,000 grant. The Streetcar system organization formed the same year.

Economy:
Yakima's growth in the 20th century was fueled primarily by agriculture. The Yakima Valley produces many fruit crops, including apples, peaches, pears, cherries, and melons. Many vegetables are also produced, including peppers, corn and beans. Many of the city's residents have come to the Valley out of economic necessity and to participate in the picking, processing, marketing and support services for the agricultural economy. Downtown Yakima, along the retail hub of the region, has undergone many changes since the late 1990s. Three major department stores and an entire shopping mall that is now closed for business, have been replaced with Whirlpool Corporation and Adaptis call-centers and several hotels. The retail core of the region has since shifted to the city of Union Gap, where a renovated shopping mall and other new retail businesses are flourishing. While some see big-box retail leaving the downtown area as a loss, others see it as an opportunity to recast the downtown area as a center for events, services, entertainment, and smaller, more personal shopping experiences. There are over 250 manufacturing firms in the Yakima area which produce a variety of product including farm implements, wood products, packaging, plastic products, clothing, aircraft parts, and recreational vehicles. Yakima is the State's leader in value of farm output, with a mature and diverse agricultural base. Yakima continues to be a leader among all counties in the nation in the production of apples, hops, sweet cherries and mint, and ranks sixteenth nationally in value of total agricultural products sold. With its farm production base, the Yakima area is also a major food-processing region.

Tourism:
Enjoy the relaxing pace of the countryside and the charm of revitalized downtowns. Explore the vineyards with a winemaker, then laugh and enjoy a long leisurely lunch. Head over to The Tasting Room. This early 1900's farmhouse and taste wines from three different boutique wineries. Situated on 80 acres with scenic vineyard views, abundant wildlife, and fantastic wine.

Next, visit Yakima Valley Museum and Children's Underground Museum. This museum offers two full floors of exhibits on the natural and cultural history of South Central Washington including the largest collection of wooden wagons west of the Mississippi. Yakima Valley fruit industry, horse-drawn vehicles, Indian art and artifacts, natural history and special exhibitions. For a taste of the arts, the Yakima Symphony Orchestra provides outstanding musicals every year with national performing artists or, head over to Yakima Electric Railway Museum. Offering vintage electric trolley rides between Selah and Yakima, the Electric Railway Museum displays Original powerhouse and electric rail equipment on display. Finally, enjoy one of the regions few Japanese Gardens. The Yakima Area Arboretum is a unique "tree museum" with both native and exotic plants from around the world.
