Hampton, Virginia

The city of Hampton, Virginia is one of seven major cities that make up the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, and is located at the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula. You will find life an absolute pleasure in this clean and modern city that values its independence from surrounding Virginia County, in fact you may well consider moving to Hampton, Virginia.

Economy:
Should you be considering relocating to Hampton, you will find this city is a really attractive prospect. It rates the sixth most populous city in Virginia with around 150,000 citizens. The local economy is quite diverse in nature with a wide array of business and industrial enterprises and healthy contributions from the tourism sector as well. From its downtown waterfront and beaches to its central business and technology districts Hampton is attracting investors and developers from across the nation. Their synergy within the City is creating exciting new opportunities for residents and visitors to live, work and play. Coliseum Central is a business district with more than 600 commercial enterprises. Here and in the adjacent High Tech corridor $1.5 billion is currently being invested in projects such as The Peninsula Galleria Shopping Center and The Medical Hub with its state of the art finishes. Langley Air Force base remains by far the single largest employer in the Hampton area though.

History:
The City of Hampton’s history traces back as far as 1610 when three ships arrived from Britain and landed at Chesapeake Bay, charged with setting up a permanent English settlement. Hampton derived its name from the 3rd Earl of Southampton, England. After the War of 1812, the U. S. Army built a Fort named of President James Munroe. Further fortifications were made at nearby Fort Calhoun and were commissioned in 1834. Hampton together with Fort Monroe played a very important strategic role in the American Civil War from 1861 – 1865, during which time Hampton was burned to the ground. The rebuilt Hampton became an independent City in March 1908. In July 1952, a referendum decided that Hampton would merge with several surrounding areas while retaining its independence as Hampton City. As the 20th century unfolded, Hampton became synonymous with the military following the opening of the nation’s first fighter establishment at Langley Air Force base.

Tourism:
The slogan for the City of Hampton is “America’s First.” Perhaps this originally referred to the landing of the first British Settlers, but we like to think it lends itself to the fabulous attractions found in this fine City. Let us begin with the newly renovated downtown area, with its old world look by way of cobblestone streets. Then there are the many other attractions ranging from galleries to fine restaurants and pubs. Stroll around the waterfront park and you will be entertained from start to finish. NASA’a Langley Research Center has opened the Virginia Air and Space Center in downtown Hampton. It tells the fascinating story of aviation and space exploration and has an impressive IMAX movie theater too. Remember to take a fun ride on an authentically restored 1920s wooden carousel while there. If you prefer the great outdoors, then a day trip to Bukroe Beach which borders Chesapeake Bay in Hampton would be fun. It consists of eight acres of unspoiled sand with lots play areas for the kids, and bike and walking paths for the more energetic.
