Fairfax, Virginia

Located just 20 minutes from Washington, D.C., Fairfax offers residents an attractive blend of commercial, office, retail and residential properties combines the charm of a small town with the opportunities of a thriving urban area. Fairfax, Virginia residents also take advantage of nearby cultural and recreational outlets. The city has a lot to offer, including a dynamic business community, a range of housing options, an abundance of recreational opportunities and proximity to Washington, D.C., the mountains and the beaches.

History:
Fairfax became an independent city in 1961. However, the start of this fundamental shift in the county's population began in the early 1930s, when Franklin D. Roosevelt swept into the Presidency of the U.S. With Roosevelt's election came increases in federal programs and bureaus. Concurrently with those increases came the additional employees to administer the new programs and to staff the new bureaus. In the 1930s, the area’s population leapt forward by 16,000 from 25,000 at the start of the decade to almost 41,000 residents by 1940. The pace of growth picked up in the 1940s during World War II, as the federal government expanded employment to meet the war emergency. When the war was over, the federal government expanded again to meet the job needs of veterans. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, federal government expansion increased at a more rapid rate than ever before, as more programs and bureaus were created. By 1970, Fairfax County total population stood at over 454,000. This growth was directly attributable to federal employment expansion and the service industries needed to assist such expansion. Indeed, the business of the county was the business of government. Although federal employment growth continued in the 1970s and 1980s, providing some population and economic growth, much of the area's growth during this period can be attributed to private economic interests. Such phenomenal growth during the past 70 years has caused broad changes throughout the Fairfax area. The county has changed from a rural, agriculturally oriented society to an urban, business-oriented one. While this growth has altered the county's lifestyle, it has also provided county residents with one of the highest standards of living in the world. Fairfax residents now enjoy the highest median family income in the nation. They also enjoy one of the best public school systems in the country, beautiful parks, an international airport, numerous recreational facilities and fine cultural opportunities.

Economy:
With thousands of technology companies doing business in Fairfax County in homeland security, Internet, e-commerce, software development, telecommunications, systems integration and aerospace, employment opportunities are numerous. Fairfax County's dynamic business community is in the forefront of one of the strongest economies in the country. Along with its well-known strengths in government and defense technology, the county has large and growing numbers of commercial IT, financial, software, communications and technology management service providers. Still, the vast majority of the county’s business establishments are small and locally owned. Those moving to Fairfax will discover its ideal mid-Atlantic location, proximity to the federal government in neighboring Washington, D.C., well-educated workforce and the high quality of life that attracts the best and brightest. Nearly 300 trade associations, professional societies and other nonprofit groups are based in Fairfax. Fairfax County is the location of choice for associations in a wide variety of industries.

Tourism:
For the history buff, the city is home to several museums including the National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, the National Firearms Museum and Fairfax Museum, which focuses primarily on Civil War battles. Fairfax offers more than 200 shopping centers featuring everything from high fashion boutiques to discount stores. Tysons Corner has two major malls, Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria, featuring 400 specialty shops and major retailers. The area also boasts two outstanding performing arts centers featuring an excellent array of concerts, Broadway productions and symphony performances. With music from classical to jazz and pop to family musicals, plays and opera, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is the place to be. The city is home to hundreds of restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. From Mexican to Moroccan, to Indian to Italian, there is something for every taste.
