Grand Prairie, Texas

Conveniently located between Dallas and Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Texas offers relaxation, family fun, friendly neighbors and a smart place to live and do business. Those moving to Grand Prairie will discover a warm and inviting place right in the heart of Texas.

History:
Grand Prairie was incorporated as a city in 1909. The newly incorporated Grand Prairie’s downtown was growing in leaps and bounds. What the town really needed, but would not get until 1917, was an organized fire department. In 1929, the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service opened near Dalworth, marking the beginning of what would become Grand Prairie’s rich history of aviation. In 1930, work began on building Mountain Creek Lake, but would not be completed until 1938. World War II began in 1939, but came to Grand Prairie in 1940 when the War Department granted permission to the Navy to use Hensley Field, from thence known as the Naval Reserve Aviation Base. In the 1940s, the town grew from 1,000 to 15,000. In 1942, Dalworth Park dissolved its incorporation and was annexed into the city of Grand Prairie. In 1957, the Dallas-Fort Worth turnpike opened, streamlining traffic from Dallas to Fort Worth and detouring traffic away from downtown Grand Prairie. In the late 1950s, Grand Prairie’s incorporated area was about 13 square miles. Grand Prairie’s population surpassed 50,000 in 1970 making it the same size as its neighbor, Arlington. The year 1997 was big for economic development with 23 new companies opening, including the first major retail in 10 years with Towne Crossing Center, featuring Home Depot and Target. In 1999, Grand Prairie was named Fastest Growing City for economic development in the Metroplex and citizens passed a quarter cent sales tax to fund parks and recreation projects, ultimately creating a parks system that would earn the “best in the nation” title in 2008 by the National Recreation and Parks Association. A city of promise, a city of growth, a city of location, Grand Prairie continues into the future on its path of success as we enter our next 100 year.

Economy:
The area has traditionally been a diverse center of manufacturing, and the city had demonstrated strong economic growth since the 1980s. However, an economic slowdown in the sector accounted for job losses for the first time in recent years. Forecasts call for an increase of manufacturing jobs, supplying 32,048 new manufacturing jobs between 2004 and 2025 for an annual growth rate of 1.2 percent. Government sector jobs are expected to show continued growth, and the transportation, communication, and utilities sector is forecasted to show growth as well. Mining business in Texas is driven by oil and gas production and has shown losses as oil prices dip. Major employers in the area are American Airlines, Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems, Bell Helicopter Textron, Radio Shack Corporation, SABRE, Pier 1 Imports, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Emerging economic sectors in the new century include semiconductor manufacturing, communications equipment manufacturing, corporate offices, and distribution. A plan was adopted called strategy to diversify, which had as its goal the creation of a healthy, diverse, less defense-dependent economy supported by business development, emerging technologies, international trade and a world class workforce.

Tourism:
Grand Prairie is home to 58 parks include a senior center, the Ruthe Jackson Conference Center, four recreation centers, a dog park, five public swimming pools two beaches on Joe Pool Lake, a campground, five softball and baseball complexes, 32 tennis courts and 18 soccer fields. In addition to private golf courses and a country club, the city’s two public top-ranked golf courses offer outstanding golf at a great price. The city’s Tangle Ridge Golf Course features bentgrass greens in a Hill Country atmosphere, and Prairie Lakes Golf Course offers one of the best golf values in the area with the largest practice putting green in Texas. Visit Lynn Creek Park, which features boat ramps, picnic sites, beaches, volleyball, a playground and plenty of natural beauty. The lake parks offer visitors clean beaches, shaded trails and ideal camping. Loyd Park offers cabins, wooded campsites, trails, showers and restrooms. Of course, the city itself is located just minutes from Dallas, Texas. The big city offers attractions including professional sports venues, museums and golf courses.
