Canton, Ohio

The city of Canton, Ohio has a population of 78,000 and is surrounded by a metropolitan area with a population of 407,180. The city is in the northeastern part of the state, lying on the Nimishillen Creek’s several forks. Canton is the county seat of Stark County and the eighth-largest city in Ohio. The city is also convenient to many of Ohio’s other urban centers, including Akron (24 miles north) and Cleveland (60 miles north). Those moving to Canton will discover an area that has something for everyone.

Economy:
Among Canton’s major employers are Diebold, Inc. (manufacturers of ATMs, bank vaults and electronic voting machines), the Belden Brick Company (producers of masonry) and The Timken Company (manufacturers of roller bearings and specialty steel). Steel and industrial production has reduced in importance in recent years, especially after the closures of the LTV (formerly Republic) Steel company in 2000 and the Hoover Company in 2007. Agricultural industries, especially dairy farming, poultry and food packaging are also important to the Canton area.

History:
The first settlement in the Canton area was in 1805 at the location where the West and Middle Branches of Nimishillen Creek met. The town grew as a manufacturing center due to the meeting of railway lines over the following decades. Canton was incorporated as a village in 1822 and as a city in 1838. The name comes from the town’s surveyor, Bezaleel Wells, who was an admirer of John O’Donnell, a trader who was the first to transport goods from Canton (now Guangzhou) to Baltimore. Future president, William McKinley, arrived in the 1860s to practice law in Canton. He later ran for governor and president from the city. A car dealership in Canton was the site of the founding of the American Professional Football Association on September 17, 1920. The Association would later evolve into the National Football League.

Tourism:
As Canton moving companies unpack your belongings, you will soon discover numerous activities in your new city. The most notable of the city’s tourist attractions is the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame, with 83,000-square feet of sports exhibits and galleries. The William McKinley Presidential Library and National Memorial (the burial place of the assassinated President) is also frequently visited, as is the National First Ladies Library and Research Center. Other museums and historical sites in the city include the Canton Classic Car Museum (housed in a Ford dealership opened in 1913), the Haines House (a stop on the Underground Railroad), the Canton Museum of Art and the Ohio Military Museum. Performing arts in Canton are strong as well, with the Canton Ballet and Symphony Orchestra offering regular shows. You can reach Canton by air from 14 cities via the Akron-Canton Airport, located in North Canton. Once in the city, bus travel is possible through the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Residents of Canton have achieved greatness for more than a century. In addition to President McKinley, Canton notables have included Augustus Juilliard (whose legacy founded the Juilliard School), child actress Peggy Ann Garner (winner of a special Oscar for "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"), TV host Jack Parr, baseball player Thurman Munson and singer Macy Gray.
  • John Chapman, better known in folklore as Johnny Appleseed, purchased property in Canton in 1809. The site of his early apple orchard is at the current intersection of Cleveland Avenue South and 5th Street.
