Columbus, Ohio

Congratulations on moving to Columbus, Ohio. The largest city in the state of Ohio, Columbus offers a diverse economy, excellent dining, fantastic shopping, and much more. Located in the middle of Ohio, Columbus has quickly become one of the most popular cities in the US. For decades, sport fanatics have recognized Columbus as the home of ultra-popular Ohio State University, but to the average American, Columbus is merely a small town in Ohio. In recent years, however, Columbus has grown exponentially and is now a large city with a population of almost two million people in the surrounding metro area.

History:
Columbus was founded in 1812. A substantial Irish population settled in the north, while the Germans took advantage of the south, creating a community that was known as "The Old South End." With a population of only 3,500, Columbus was officially chartered as a city in 1834. During the Civil War, Columbus was the site of Camp Chase, a military base for the Union Army. By the end of the 19th century, Columbus saw the ascend of several major manufacturing businesses including popular brewing companies, buggy manufacturers and the steel industry. A construction boom beginning in the 1920s resulted in the Ohio Theatre, a new Civic Center, a new Civic Center and a gigantic new Ohio Stadium. The difficulties of the Great Depression were a bit less severe on Columbus, as the city's diversified economy helped it fare better than its neighbors did. World War II brought an incredible number of new jobs to the city and with it another population boom.

Economy:
Columbus's economy is balanced between the trade, services, government and manufacturing sectors. State government, banking, research, insurance, education and data processing in have helped the city resist recession. Telecommunications, health care, retailing and the military are other significant employment areas. The city is home to more than 70 insurance companies, ranking Columbus among the insurance capitals of the country. Columbus is also the corporate headquarters for major firms such as Banc One Corporation, Nationwide Insurance Enterprise, Battelle Memorial Institute and Bob Evans Foods Inc. Twenty of Columbus's largest financial institutions operate over 400 offices throughout the metropolitan area. The U.S. government is the city's third largest employer, and manufacturing is responsible for nearly 10 percent of the metropolitan Columbus economic base; core production is in machinery, fabricated metal, printing and publishing and food processing.

Tourism:
Columbus is best enjoyed for what it is: a lively college town with more than a few amazing museums, gorgeous Germanic architecture and a vibrant nightlife. The spacious, methodical and laid-back downtown area holds several attractions, along with the new Arena District entertainment zone. The city’s main nightlife areas include bohemian Short North Arts District and more mainstream Brewery District and are on the north and south fringes of the city. Visit Magic Mountain Family Amusement Center for family fun that includes miniature golf, a large arcade, laser tag, go-karts and bumper boats. For the sport fanatic, the Columbus Crew is the city’s major league soccer team; they play games from March to October. Next, explore Schiller Park. Positioned on 24 beautiful acres, this park includes the magnificent Huntington Perennial Gardens, a fishing pond, basketball courts, a playground, a picnic area, a softball field, an amphitheatre and four lighted tennis courts, this park has it all.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:
