Comparable to the more famous Silicon Valley, the triangle was established in 1959 by local governments, universities and businessmen. History:
The University of North Carolina had its campus in Chapel Hill even before the end of 18th century. The town was created to serve the people at the university. The original map of the town shows about 30 parcels of land surrounding the north, west and east fringes of the campus and a hill in the centre of the town with a chapel in it. It was known as the New Hope Chapel and was under the Church of England. The town became known as Chapel Hill. Although the chapel was eventually removed, but the name stuck to the place and when the town was officially incorporated in 1819, the same name was used. The University played the main role in the growth of Chapel Hill. In 1959, the development of The Research Triangle boosted the economy and industrial culture of the city. A number of companies have since made the area their major centre for Research and Development.
