History:
Founded in 1854, Omaha was selected as the eastern station for the first transcontinental railroad in America, ensuring Omaha place as a major transportation hub for years to come. The meatpacking industry came to town in the 1880s, quickly making Omaha the fastest growing city in America. The Trans-Mississippi Exposition of 1898 attracted over two million visitors to Omaha, many of whom stay, making Omaha their permanent home. With World War II, the Enola Gay and Bock’s Car were manufactured at the Martin Aircraft Factory in Omaha. After the war, the Omaha Stockyards became the world’s largest livestock processing center. The city is the birthplace to many famous Americans, including President Ford, Malcolm X, Marlon Brando and the city’s most popular billionaire, William Buffet.

Economy:
Omaha, Nebraska is home to five Fortune 500 companies, including Peter Kiewit Sons, Berkshire Hathaway and Mutual of Omaha. There are over 20,000 businesses located in the city’s metropolitan area, and more than 30 other Fortune 500 companies have manufacturing plants within the city. In addition, nearly 30 insurance companies and many other large firms have their headquarters in Omaha, including Lozier Corporation, ITI Marketing Services, First Data Corp, Omaha Steaks International and Godfather's Pizza, Inc. The Omaha economy is well diversified, with no industry sector accounting for more than one third of total employment. Omaha's highest concentration of employment is in transportation, trade and utilities with strong showings in education and health services as well as professional and business services.
