Missoula, Montana lies in a valley on a glacial lake bed which is bisected by the Clark Fork River, which is fed by the Bitterroot River in the south west of the city; while the Big Blackfoot River feeds into the Clark Fork River to the east of the city. History:
The region we now know as Missoula was originally the home of the Kootenai, Pend d'Oreille and Salish Native American tribes.

The first European settler recorded in the area was a Jesuit priest, who built a mission station in 1841. By 1860 a large number of Europeans had settled in an area they called Hellgate Village, which was subsequently renamed Missoula Mills which then became the City of Missoula, which was incorporated in August 1883.
