History:
In 1850, Kansas City, Missouri was incorporated as a city. Unfortunately, the area was ripe with hostility as the Civil War approached. As citizens of a slave state, Missourians tended to identify with the southern states. With Kansas petitioning to enter the Union, many from the region crossed into Kansas to sway the state towards allowing slavery, at first by ballot box and then by bloodshed. After the Civil War, the City of Kansas grew rapidly, however it wasn’t until after 1869, when the Hannibal Bridge opened, that the population really began to explode. By 1889, the boom prompted a name change to Kansas City, and extended the city limits south and east. The city became the vanguard of modern architecture, developing a network of boulevards and parks around the city. Following World War II, the city underwent a considerable population decrease, as the wealthy populace left for suburbs.
