History:
In 1818, a township was set up named “Huron Township,” after the local Huron River. This caused confusion with the Huron River south of Detroit, and so both township and river were re-named after De Witt Clinton, who was Governor of New York between 1817 and 1823. The governor had been largely responsible for the building of the Erie Canal, which opened the Michigan area up for settlement. The Moravian missionaries were very active in the area in the early 1800’s too, and much their early history can be viewed in the Clinton Township Historical Village. The growth of the Charter Township of Clinton was (and is) closely aligned to that of the City of Detroit, which saw tremendous growth and development, particularly in the automotive industry throughout the last century.

Economy:
As part of Metro Detroit Clinton Township shares commercial opportunity, job creation and economic development. The top employers in the Detroit area are diverse thanks to re-alignment and new investment. The bigger employment sectors are professional and business services, trade / transportation and utilities, manufacturing, education and health services, government (state, county and local authorities), leisure and hospitality and finance.

Tourism:
While Clinton Township has its own unique history, its tourism sector networks closely with the entire lake system of Michigan and all its towns and cities. Visitors often prefer to base themselves in smaller cities and towns, and then spread out from there to nearby attractions and places of interest. Visit the Michigan Tourism website and you will find a mine of information about attractions, events and places to visit.

Universities/Colleges:

Interesting Facts:

  • The movie remake of Red Dawn was filmed in the Detroit area.
  • Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino was filmed in Detroit and many of the surrounding areas, in 2008.
  • Many famous American automobile brands were born and bred in this capital of the automotive industry too.
