Lansing, Michigan

Lansing, Michigan offers residents a stable economy, affordable housing, excellent educational institutions, reasonable living cost and endless entertainment options. In fact, Expansion Management Less recently awarded the “Five Star Quality of Life Quotient” to the Lansing region. Just two hours away from Detroit, Michigan's Capital City is located on the picturesque banks of the Grand River. The city is blessed with an excellent system of parks, and the River Trail offers terrific opportunities for hiking and biking. Residents and businesses alike are attracted to Lansing for its central location, first-rate city services, and its abundance of educational and employment opportunities. When moving to Lansing, you will experience small-town affection and charm while enjoying the fun and sophistication of a big city.

History:
In 1847, the area had fewer than 20 residents when the state constitution mandated that the current state capital relocate from Detroit to a more centralized and protected location. The state legislature found that Detroit's proximity to the border made it susceptible to invasions by British forces in Canada. There was also concern that the large city would hold too much power over state politics. The small village quickly expanded in the years following the relocation of the state's capital. The Michigan Agriculture College in East Lansing and the Michigan Female College opened soon after. Established in 1855, the Agricultural College is the first land grant college and oldest agricultural teaching center in the US. These educational institutions would eventually combine to become Michigan State University. By the time the city was incorporated in 1859, Lansing had nearly 3,000 residents. The city continued to grow steadily during the next couple of decades, adding a citywide rail system and the current state Capitol building. Throughout the rest of the century, the city developed into an industrial powerhouse. Lansing’s transition to manufacturing began in the late 1800s with the founding of the Olds Motor Vehicle Company by R.E. Olds. Lansing soon emerged as a key American industrial hub for the manufacturing of automobiles and now produces more cars each year than any other city in the country. Today, the city's economy is diversified among government service, healthcare and education.

Economy:
The state government is unsurprisingly the most significant employer within the city. Services, wholesale and retail trade, education and manufacturing make up the economic base of the Lansing area. Health care accounts for the largest part of the services sector, followed by business services. Many insurance companies have headquarters or corporate or regional offices in Lansing. Other significant sectors are education, transportation and public utilities. The Lansing region is a central notch in the Midwest manufacturing belt. Despite the 2004 departure of the Oldsmobile plant, the city received a huge boost by the opening of the new General Motors plant. A variety of high-technology firms found their start at Michigan State University; the school pushes for rapid growth in that industry.

Tourism:
There are many exciting, entertaining and enlightening things to see and do in and around Lansing, Michigan. From Potter Park Zoo (for the animal lover) to the historic Turner Dodge House (for the history buff), we are sure to have an entertainment option to delight you and your family. Check out the Lansing Lugnuts, the city’s professional minor league baseball team, at Cooley Law School Stadium in our newly renovated Stadium District. Downtown Lansing is gaining momentum as a destination all its own. With unique shops, fine dining and lively taverns and clubs, a night on the town cannot be complete without a visit to Washington Square. The Entertainment Express trolley service connects downtown Lansing to downtown East Lansing, and convenient stops and pubs are located throughout the downtown areas in both cities.

Colleges/Universities:
