Home to the “Louisville Slugger” and an important river port, Louisville, Kentucky has long been a wealthy city with modern skyscrapers contrasting with historic architecture in the downtown area. In addition to the city’s many entertainment opportunities, the city boast a stable economy and laid back-style living making Louisville a great moving destination.

History:
The history of Louisville is heavily influenced by the area's unique geographic location. In 1769, explorer Daniel Boone created a trail from North Carolina to Tennessee, and spent the following couple years exploring the state of Kentucky. Col. George Rogers Clark made the first settlement near modern-day Louisville in 1778. Thirteen families stayed behind and established Fort Nelson, the first permanent settlement at the site of Louisville. Today, Clark is recognized as the founder of Louisville, lending his name to several landmarks. Two years after the city’s settlement, the Virginia General Assembly and then-Governor Thomas Jefferson approved the town charter of Louisville. The city name is in honor of King Louis XVI of France, whose soldiers at the time was aiding Americans in the Revolutionary War. In 1803, explorers Lewis and Clark organized their expedition across America at the Falls of the Ohio in Louisville. In 1828, Louisville became an incorporated city and the city’s population grew to over 7,000. And in 1839 a race at Old Louisville's Oakland Race Course laid the foundation for what today has become the Kentucky Derby

Economy:
Louisville, river accessibility, central location and mild climate have contributed to the city’s significance as a hub for industry and commerce. Historically been a mining and agricultural state, Louisville has considerably diversified its economic in recent years. Louisville has traditionally been a manufacturing center for durable goods including appliances and automobiles. Like the rest of the state, Louisville is undergoing a new era of economic expansion, with the public and private sectors working together to attract new industries. And in 2003, Entrepreneur magazine listed Louisville as the number one "Best City for Small Business Growth." The Louisville area is headquarters to some of the nation's finest companies, including Yum! Brands Inc., Kindred Healthcare and Humana Inc. One of the better-known industries based in Louisville is Hillerich & Bradsby, makers of the famous "Louisville Slugger" baseball bat. The services sector is the leading economic sector in the region. Tourism leads the region's service industries, with approximately 26,000 jobs generated by the tourism industry.

Each year, thousands of horse enthusiasts scamper to Churchill Downs (located in Louisville), the legendary home of the Kentucky Derby. In addition to equestrian endeavors and bluegrass roots, Louisville boasts an assortment of exciting attractions for the whole family to enjoy. Take a stroll through Central Park’s historic district to get a real feel for the city. Next, visit other nearby parks for hiking, biking and fossil finding.
