Indianapolis, Indiana

If you’re moving to Indianapolis, you are in for a treat. This charming city is known for its exciting night life in the center of town, and its location at the crossroads of the Midwest means that it’s got a thriving economy, too.

What else keeps Indianapolis moving companies so busy? It helps that the city has seen a cultural Renaissance recently. Many new attractions have opened there since 1999, including the White River Gardens, the Indiana Historical Society headquarters, the Conseco Fieldhouse, additional exhibit space at the Indiana Convention Center and RCA Dome, a new building at the Indiana State Museum, new facilities at the White River State Park and a new terminal at the Indianapolis International Airport, slated for completion in 2008. With so many new projects in the works, it’s no wonder that people are relocating to Indianapolis in droves.

Economy:
Because Indianapolis is located near the vast agricultural belt of the Midwest, it is an important transportation and commercial center. It boasts five railroads, four interstate highways and an international airport. Shipping costs from this hub of activity are among the lowest in the United States, which attracts even more manufacturers and catalog companies.

The city’s other focus is on sports; it hosts both amateur sporting events (such as high school tournaments) and professional events (such as baseball games and races). The insurance industry also has an established local presence, as does the meatpacking industry. Of course, its status as the State capital has also created many jobs for Indianapolis residents.

History:
Indianapolis has the distinction of being a city established by the order of the United States Congress. When Indiana was granted statehood in 1816, Congress set aside land for the establishment of a capitol. Representatives from the Indiana legislature chose the site because it was located at almost the exact center of the State. The new city grew slowly, because it was not situated near a navigable waterway (the nearby White River is too shallow for shipping boats). The problem was seemingly solved when the Central Canal from Broad Ripple was completed, but it lost water and became too shallow for navigation. At last, in 1831, a national highway was rerouted through the city, and the highway was soon followed by the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad.

The city began growing by leaps and bounds. During the American Civil War, it was an important base and the site of a munitions factory. This increased its importance, and at the end of the nineteenth century, Indianapolis experienced a golden age. Its citizens installed electric street lighting, erected many of its now-historic monuments and built so many beautiful houses that Indianapolis became known as “the city of homes.”

Tourism:
Indianapolis is a mecca for sports enthusiasts. Most visitors begin their tour at the world-renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which has hosted the annual Indy 500 auto race for more than a hundred years. The track offers bus tours of the grounds, which circles the famous track at a rather slower rate than the racecars. The Speedway isn’t the only sports arena that offers tours; Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) hosts year-round tours of the stadium. After your tour, drop by the century-old St. Elmo’s Steakhouse, which offers a legendary shrimp cocktail.

Even for visitors who are not interested in sports, Indianapolis offers many pleasant diversions. It is known as “America’s Most Walkable City.” One of the best places for pedestrians is the Canal Walk, which is a long promenade beside the beautiful Central Canal. For another view of the canal, rent a peddle boat or hire a gondola. Nearby attractions include the Indiana State Museum, the Museum of American Indians and Western Art, the NCAA Hall of Champions and many fine restaurants. Whether you’re moving cross-country or just a few cities over, Indianapolis is a fascinating city to call home.
