Known as the 'soybean capital of the world,' the first settlers of Decatur, Illinois was named after Stephen Decatur, the American naval hero. Decatur is beautifully set next to Lake Decatur on river Sangamon which gives a welcoming sight to those moving here. Over the last decade, the population of the city has declined to 75,000. Economy:
Decatur is one of the famous manufacturing cities in Illinois. This region is famous for growing crops and is home to the leading agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland Co. Tate & Lyle are also based here. Tate & Lyle are known for its distinctive high quality ingredients for the food and beverage industries. Both the agriculture and manufacturing industries make Decatur self-sufficient in providing its families for their everyday needs. Caterpillar, the mining equipment and heavy machinery manufacturer also operates a branch in Decatur. During the period from 1917-1922, Comet Automobile Co. was also active here. Apart from the manufacturing industry, Decatur is also famous for its Technological breakthroughs. It is known as the world leader in creating fuel for the future. History:
In 1820 William Downing was the first person to settle in the county. Leonard Stevens and family moved in two years later. The most popular resident of the city was Abraham Lincoln who lived here for a year in 1930. After Lincoln moved to the neighboring city of Springfield, he still practiced law here. Lincoln gave his first speech in Decatur about the importance of navigation on Sangamon River. This speech brought Lincoln into the political scene. In addition to Lincoln, Decatur has been visited by other famous presidents like John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Decatur was also visited by Mikhail Gorbachev, a Soviet leader who was a friend of ADM’s CEO Dwayne Andreas.

Tourism:
The city has a number of places decorated with monuments in memory and honor of Abraham Lincoln. The place where he gave his famous “Stump Speech” and the place where John Palmer nominated Lincoln as president during the Illinois Republican Convention in 1860. Apart from Lincoln, Decatur has been home to Hieronymus Mueller, a person who has literally defined our lives. Mueller designed the modern water tap, the spark plug and several other important inventions. There is a museum in honor of him in Decatur. The city also has preserved a number of buildings, some dating back to 1850. Among them are the Prairie Farm and Millikin University. There is also a zoo, a golf course and numerous green parks and recreation areas. The ambience of the city is the main attraction to people moving to Decatur.
