History:
The village of Arlington was originally known as Dunton. It was established by a stone cutter called Asa Dunton in 1836 who named the settlement after himself. The next bands of Europeans who arrived in the area were German farmers who settled here in the 1850s. These farmers grew potatoes and established orchards of fruit trees in the area. The main economic boost came to the area when the railroad arrived. This resulted in large numbers of businesses being established in the area. Trade activities were so successful that trains made six trips daily between Chicago and Dunton. The name was changed to Arlington Heights in 1887. There was a huge increase in population during the 1950s and 1960s.
