Columbus, Georgia

Columbus is the third largest city in the state with a diverse Columbus history and a population of approximately 230,000. The city is located in the Chattahoochee Valley in Western Central Georgia at the intersection of five major highways, making it convenient to many big cities in Georgia. The Columbus Metropolitan Airport is another wonderful and convenient transportation route into and out of the city, making it easy for family and friends to visit from out of town. The city was also named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in 2008. Those moving to Columbus, Georgia will surely discover a wonderful place to live.

History:
Columbus was established in 1828 on the Chattahoochee River. As the northern most navigable point on the Chattahoochee River from the Gulf of Mexico, Columbus became a center of shipping and military manufacturing. Columbus has extended its corporate limits eight times since 1828 to maintain pace with urban development. The 20th century saw drastic change in the County. In 1917, Harlem was badly damaged by fire. Additionally, the process of bringing electricity to the County began. Men from Columbia County answered the call of duty and served bravely in both World Wars. Prior to World War II, the County was still almost completely agricultural. Camp Gordon was established, absorbing for the U.S. Army a large portion of Richmond County and parts of Columbia, McDuffie, and Jefferson. Between 1950 and 1990, the population increased dramatically. Agriculture likewise declined majorly, the County becoming largely a residential area for persons employed in Augusta. A considerable number of persons stationed at Fort Gordon eventually settled in Columbia County. The schools were integrated largely without incident under the wise leadership of Superintendent John Pierce Blanchard, and the unincorporated communities of Martinez (formerly Lulaville, named after a Cuban Doctor) and Evans (named after a Confederate General) become the population centers of the county since they were nearest to Augusta. And yet again, the location of the Courthouse and seat of government reared its head, and today, Evans is for all intents and purposes de facto county seat, being the location of an expansive new Courthouse Annex and other government offices.

Economy:
Columbus has been a leading U.S. distribution center for more than a century. Major corporations headquartered in the Columbus area include Worthington Industries, Limited Brands, and Wendy's International. Government, professional and business services, and trade are the leading employment sectors in the Columbus area. Ohio State Government and the U.S. Government are ranked numbers one and three, providing jobs for more than 63,000 residents in Central Ohio. Columbus has some great statistics to show its appeal to new residents entering the area. The Median Income is $43,705 with 60% of people owning their own homes, and has retail sales generating $2.3 billion, showing that the economy is doing well. Already a well-established area with an extensive history, Columbus and its economy will continue to grow as the new Army Armor Center moves into neighboring Fort Benning, bringing with it 33,000 new residents and 11,000 new jobs, giving plenty of opportunities to new and existing residents. The cost of living in the Chattahoochee Valley is 17 percent less than the national average, with the median home cost at $118,500, making it affordable to live here no matter your tax bracket.

Tourism:
The National Infantry Museum is a privately owned museum and a must-see for the history buffs. A free museum, the National Infantry Museum provides an excellent overview of the strategic position in U.S. infantry's service. Next, the Springer Opera House is an 1871 landmark that has been designated the official State Theater of Georgia. For a little more history, the Columbus Museum is the second largest art museum in Georgia offers room after room of fine and decorative American art, with a special emphasis on the Southeast and the Chattahoochee River Valley. Heritage Corner, located at 7th Street and Broadway in the Columbus historic district, has a row of 19th-century buildings and houses of different architectural styles. Among them is the home of Dr. John S. Pemberton, who invented the original formula for Coca-Cola. And speaking of Coca-Cola, the Coca-Cola Space Science Center is where you can visit replicas of the first Coca-Cola beverage machine taken into space and a dupe of the Apollo capsule that NASA used during the 1960's, and much more on the soft drinks history.

Colleges/Universities:
