Tallahassee, Florida

Why are so many people moving to Tallahassee? The answer is simple: this city has something for everyone. Its many universities and colleges draw young people from throughout the area while creating jobs and adding spice to the local culture. The area is also ecologically diverse, with more hills than the typical Florida landscape, as well as two large lake basins that attract many nature enthusiasts.

What else keeps the Tallahassee moving companies on their toes? It helps to have a thriving arts scene. The many local music venues and galleries offer everything from blues to ballet. Dance, theater, film and the visual arts also have their homes here. But there’s more to tempt casual visitors into relocating cross-country to Tallahassee than just a greats arts scene. For example, consider the local economy.

Economy:
Tallahassee is Florida’s state capital, which means that the Florida State government is one of the largest employers in the area. This has led to a relatively high rate of employment as well as a stable job market. Tallahassee is also a major center for technology, and it is sometimes known as “the Silicon Valley of the South.” Other major products of Tallahassee include pulpwood, insecticides, lumber, boats and animal feed.

Local civic leaders have demonstrated their commitment to future growth by creating incentives for new business. For example, businesses that relocate to Tallahassee (or add a location in Tallahassee) may be eligible for tax credits and incentives if their offices will be in the twenty-mile “economic development zone” in the central and southwestern part of the community.

History:
Native Americans have lived in the Tallahassee are for more than 12,000 years. They knew the area as “Anhaica,” where the Apalachee Indians had one of their largest settlements. The first European to visit Anhaica was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. He was followed by many other explorers in search of gold. Although they didn’t find the precious metal, they did set up more than 25 Spanish settlements in North Central Florida, including the local Mission San Luis.

Florida became a United States Territory in 1822. When the cities of Saint Augustine and Pensacola began vying to become the official State capital, a search party was sent out to find a compromise location between the two locations. They chose Tallahassee for its beauty. It was a rich area for farming, with more than 70 plantations in the area.

During the American Civil War, Tallahassee was the only Confederate capital east of the Mississippi River that was not invaded by Union troops. This means that much of the city’s antebellum architecture survives to this day. Many years after the war, Tallahassee became an important part of the Civil Rights movement of the 20th century. The richness of the African-American experience is celebrated in Tallahassee to this day, with museums and archives dedicated to preserving African-American history.

Tourism:
Any tour of Tallahassee should include the Florida State Capitol Building. The building has been restored to its 1902 appearance, with cheerful candy-striped awnings that stand out against the clean white-washed exterior. The interior is just as beautiful; be sure to check out the stained-glass dome. The Museum of Florida History is also a must-see for history buffs because it chronicles Florida’s past. Treasures at the museum include the bones of prehistoric mastodons, artifacts from the original Native American inhabitants, mementos from the Spanish colonists and documents from the Civil War and Civil Rights eras.

Outdoors enthusiasts can also find many exciting things to do in Tallahassee. Bird-watchers will enjoy a visit to Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park at Lake Jackson and the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, which are both winter homes for many species of migratory birds. Local parks also offer opportunities for kayaking, hiking, cycling, biking and running. For those that prefer to watch sports instead of participating, the two major universities offer sporting events throughout the year.

Interesting Facts:

  • Tallahassee’s Wakulla Springs is one of the world’s deepest freshwater springs. It is the site of the discovery of a set of mastodon bones that is estimated to be 12,000 years old.
  • There are no state or local income taxes in Tallahassee.
  • Unlike most of Florida, Tallahassee has a four-season climate. The weather in Tallahassee (and most of the panhandle) is considered temperate as compared to the sub-tropical climate elsewhere in Florida.
