Sitting at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, the winters can be bitterly cold, with an average snowfall of 57 inches. The summers can get quite hot, and temperatures around 100 are possible in July. Fort Collins is the home of Colorado State University. Anyone moving to Fort Collins can expect a busy and vibrant community with plenty to do and see.

Economy:
Fort Collins was ranked number in Money magazine's best places to live in 2008 and came in number six in 2010. It consistently wins awards for things like best place to open a business and best place to retire. It has a fairly low unemployment rate. Because of the University, Fort Collins attracts many high-tech companies such as Hewlett Packard, Intel and National Semiconductor. Fort Collins also attracts many small businesses with good incentive plans.

History:
Fort Collins began as a military fort for the army. It was built in 1864 to protect the Overland Trail. It soon attracted settlers and farming sprang up around the fort. The fort was decommissioned in 1867. The town was incorporated in 1873. The local college began holding its classes in 1879. Sheep became a major business there, and the growing of beets to feed the sheep was another important industry. The population doubled after World War II and in the 1960s the college doubled its enrollment. The city has continued to grow and prosper ever since.

Tourism:
Especially because of being a college town, there is always something to do in Fort Collins. The area around Old Town has been completely revitalized, and is filled with art galleries, restaurants and cafes, boutiques, pubs and music. There is a gallery walk every Friday year round. The area around the Cache La Poudre River provides whitewater rafting, miles of hiking trails, and bike trails. There are five public golf courses, 44 parks and 30,000 acres of nature areas. Of course, skiing and all sorts of wonderful winter activities are available all winter long there. Every may there is a Fort Collins Marathon. In June, check out the Brewers Festival. For three days in August, Fort Collins celebrates their biggest annual festival, NewWestFest. There are arts, crafts, food, and nine stages with the best of Colorado’s entertainment. And you don’t want to miss the Swetsville Zoo; it is collection of over 160 sculptures made by one man out of car parts, farm machinery and scrap metal.
