Arvada, Colorado

Arvada, Colorado is a beautiful first-ring suburb of Denver, the Mile High City. Arvada retains a small-town feel even with its estimated population of 107,700. Established in 1870, Arvada enjoys a rich history, quiet tree-lined neighborhoods, and a robust mix of business. Our strong civic leadership balances quality of life with an understanding and support of business and economic development. Arvada's diverse economic base, highly educated workforce, low crime rate, and superb quality of life have helped shape our community into one of the most attractive and advantageous place to live.

History:
Arvada's story began with Colorado's first gold discovery. On June 22, 1850, a wagon train bound for California crossed the Platte River just north of the confluence with Clear Creek, following Clear Creek west for six miles. Over the next century and a half, the significance of the discovery was lost. By 1860, men who came for gold but stayed to develop farms and establish a home had filed more than thirty land claims in the Ralston/Clear Creek valley. World War I brought an upsurge in prices paid for crops, but the population fell to 840 as most eligible men joined the forces overseas. Rationing of food and supplies affected all citizens. In the early 1920s, the KKK targeted Arvada's small Italian Catholic community, burning crosses on Carr Hill, Hackberry Hill, and the lawn of The Shrine of St. Anne's Catholic Church. On April 8, 1951, Arvada, population 2,539, achieved the status of second class city. The Town Board was now called a City Council and the Trustees became Councilmen or Councilwomen. The first city manager was hired in 1961. On January 28, 1967, the "super highway," Interstate 70, was opened between Wadsworth and Kipling streets. Arvada retains its small town feel despite its estimated population of 106,327. Residents and businesses have easy access to world-class research institutions including the University of Colorado and Colorado School of Mines; in addition, the Arvada campus of Red Rocks Community College provides training assistance to meet employer needs. Arvada's diverse economic base, highly educated workforce, low crime rate, and superb quality of life have helped shape our community into one of the most attractive and competitive cities in the Centennial State.

Economy:
Arvada is largely a commuter town to Denver and Boulder. Major companies in the metropolitan area employ workers in a range of fields such as air transportation, telecommunications, aerospace and manufacturing. The area is also a major energy research center and a regional headquarters for government agencies. The are is also the transportation hub for a large portion of the western United States; consumer and industrial goods are transported by air, rail, and truck through Denver to more than 30 million people annually. The area’s central location places it in an advantageous position for future economic development and growth. Analysts predict that the U.S. population is shifting south and west, with future concentration expected in the area from California to Utah and to the Gulf coast in Texas. Denver is at the center of this region; projections indicate that the city will become a high-technology research, development, and manufacturing hub for the entire Southwest.

Tourism:
Head over to Cussler Museum. This museum offers around 100 cars on display. Each car has a little bit of history with it and several have been featured in the novels of Clive Cussler, being used by the hero Dirk Pitt. You do not have to be a fan of Cussler or even cars to enjoy this place, the quality of the exhibits and the peaceful easygoing pace of the museum offers is a welcome respite from the hustle & bustle of city life. Next, Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. This Arts performance center with art galleries, classes and a children's playground, is ideal for the entire family. Golfers will enjoy the Lake Arbor Golf Club. An 18-hole golf course, visitors can choose to hit the range or pair up to hit the course for a full round. Finally, the Majestic View Nature Center offers 80 acres of undisturbed environment that interactively teaches the nature and historical culture of the area. The perfect place for the whole family, the Nature Center provides and educational setting for exploring and interacting with nature.
