Chula Vista, California

With a population of 230,000, Chula Vista, California covers 50 square miles and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and mountains on the east. The city is at the center of one of the richest economic and culturally diverse zones in the country. As the second largest city in San Diego County, Chula Vista has quickly become a special destination for tourists. With its six lane boulevards, north/south toll road, and both master planned and established communities, the city continues to provide the best in living choices. From estate homes to affordable housing, those moving to Chula Vista will discover something for everyone.

History:
The city of Chula Vista was created in 1889. A resident, James D. Schulyer, suggested the name Chula Vista for the town and the San Diego Land and Town Company adopted it. Chula Vista can be roughly translated in Spanish as "beautiful view." In 1888, the Sweetwater Dam was completed to bring water to Chula Vista residents and their farming lands. Chula Vista eventually became the largest lemon-growing center in the world for a period. A railroad was built to connect San Diego, National City, Chula Vista and Otay. This railroad, know as the National City and Otay Railroad, flourished for many years. In 1911, an election was held in Chula Vista to incorporate and the people voted in its favor. The State of California approved this Act of Incorporation in November. Local farmers continued to grow lemons as their primary crop and used over eight packinghouses in the city.

However, terrible weather came to the area in the following years causing severe damage. Crops suffered from a severe freeze in 1913 and droughts in 1914 and 1915. World War II ushered in changes that would affect the City of Chula Vista forever. The principal reason was the relocation of Rohr Aircraft Corporation to Chula Vista in early 1941, just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. With the demand for housing, the land never returned to being orchard groves again. The population of Chula Vista tripled from 5,000 residents in 1940 to more than 16,000 in 1950. After the war, many of the factory workers and thousands of servicemen stayed in the area resulting in the huge growth in population. During those years, numerous schools, homes, banks, restaurants, gas stations and shopping centers opened to accommodate the growing number of residents. The last of the citrus groves and produce fields disappeared as Chula Vista became one of the largest communities in San Diego.

Economy:
Electronic and irrigation equipment, aircraft parts and furniture and are among the city’s largest manufactures. Chula Vista is a rapidly growing city, with its population increased by nearly continuing to grow. The city's economy has been tied to San Diego Bay, a natural harbor that today is one of California's five major ports. The fourth largest segment of the economy is agriculture. Chula Vista is one of the largest agricultural producers in the country. It is a top producer of nursery products, flowers, foliage plants and avocados. The area is a center for high technology and biotechnology. Nearly 160,000 high-technology workers are employed at 1,400 companies throughout Chula Vista and San Diego. San Diego's harbor has had the most significant impact on the local economy, however, through the Eleventh Naval District Headquarters, the base for the U.S. Navy Pacific fleet, which is located on the bay. San Diego is the Navy's principal location for West Coast and Pacific Ocean operations. Increases in military and homeland defense spending during the early 2000s have contributed to economic growth in the Chula Vista area.

Tourism:
Head over to the Chula Vista Nature Center. Here you can explore interactive exhibits at the Nature Center describe the history, geology, ecology, natural history and bio-diversity of Sweetwater. Marsh and San Diego Bay. Next, Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre is an outdoor performing arts theater, The amphitheater is located just 17 minutes from downtown San Diego in Chula Vista, and is the area's first major concert facility designed specifically for music. The Harbor in Chula Vista offers spectacular views and easy access to southern San Diego Bay. The harbor includes two marinas, an RV park and several restaurants. Knotts Soak City USA is a great place to bring the family. Packed with water rides and relaxing pools, the park is the ideal place to spend a hot summer day. Finally, Onstage Playhouse
is recognized as a significant cultural arts contributor to the community. The theater seats 60 and produces six or more plays per year.

Interesting Facts:

  • Chula Vista means "beautiful view" in Spanish.
  • The Chula Vista area has the third largest concentration of biotech companies in the U.S.
  • The city is located just seven miles from downtown San Diego and seven miles from the Mexican/U.S. border.
