Tempe, Arizona

Home to Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona provides the energy that you would expect from a college town and the attractions that you would expect from the perfect moving destination. The city is located in the heart of the Greater Phoenix area, just minutes away from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Today, the City of Tempe is recognized nationwide as the home of one of the nation’s most popular colleges, and continues to boat a strong modern economy based on commerce, tourism and technology.

History:
The first settlers to move to the Tempe area, south of the Salt River and east of Phoenix, were Hispanic families from southern Arizona. In 1872, some of these Mexican settlers founded a town called San Pablo east of Tempe Butte. Another settlement, known as Hayden's Ferry, urbanized west of Tempe Butte. Charles Trumbull Hayden, owner of a mercantile and freighting business in Tucson, homesteaded this location in 1870. Both settlements grew rapidly and soon formed one city. And in 1879 that town was named Tempe. The Maricopa and Phoenix Railroad, built in the late 1880s, crossed the Salt River at Tempe, linking the town to the nation's growing transportation system. The Tempe Land and Improvement Company was formed to sell land in the blooming town. The City of Tempe, Arizona became one of the most significant business and shipping centers for the surrounding area. After World War II, the City of Tempe, Arizona began growing at a speedy rate as veterans and others moved to the city. The last of the local farms quickly disappeared. Tempe had grown into a modern city. The town's small teachers college also grew, and in 1958, the institution became Arizona State University. Prompted by Tempe’s centennial in 1971, Mill Avenue was recharged into an entertainment and shopping district.

The city also provides a high density of business within the city, creating a solid job market within the community for Tempe residents. These businesses are vital to keeping the community maintained, as Tempe has more jobs than residents. There are more than 3,000 finance, insurance and real estate companies, and over 7,000 advanced business service companies, which bring in over $7 million annually. And the average income for the city is over $53,000, according to Dunn and Bradstreet. Top advanced business services providers in Tempe include the regional headquarters for Chase Manhattan Bank, the headquarters for Edward Jones and Wells Fargo Loan Services. Tempe offers high density of businesses and more than 30 miles of fiber optic cable running throughout the community to keep companies moving. Effortless accessibility to freeways and Sky Harbor International Airport make Tempe a natural choice for any business that travels regionally or internationally. Also, Arizona State University, provides a steady stream of educated employees, both graduates and students.
