Mesa, Arizona

There are many good reasons why nearly half a million people call Mesa, Arizona home. This amazing city offers residence a superior education system, a skilled workforce, low crime rate, affordable housing and the opportunity for an exceptional quality of life. Local events, excellent dining and shopping help make Mesa a great moving destination.

History:
The city of Mesa purchased the utility company in 1917, becoming one of the few cities in the state with its own utilities. It provided the funds that permitted construction and service projects to be put into practice during the Great Depression. Some of the improvements were paved streets, sidewalks and curbs, a hospital, a recreation department and a modern city hall and library. In 1941, Falcon Field Airport and Williams Air Force Base were built to provide training for World War II pilots. After the war, many military families would settle in the city. Air conditioning came into common use, and tourism became a major factor in the late 1940s. The 1950s brought more commerce and industry to the city, including several early aerospace companies. However, until 1960 more than 50 percent of residents earned their living from farming, mainly citrus and cotton. The 1960s through 1990s saw more high technology companies come to town. Mesa has developed into the third largest city in Arizona and the 46th largest city in the U.S.

Economy:
The arid, warm climate of Mesa has made it a top-flight locale for aeronautical industries that range from manufacturing to educational. Boeing maintains a facility at Falcon Field Airport where flight control panels are created, tested, and installed in freighters. Boeing Training Services and Systems not only equips pilots with the latest knowledge in flight but puts together training packages that can be administered to prospective pilots in other locations. TRW Vehicle Safety Systems, Inc., is the subsidiary of a Fortune 500 company and stands at the head of Mesa manufacturers. The plant produces vehicle restraint systems and other safety equipment, which is sold to automakers from around the world. TRW has been on the leading edge of safety system integration of restraint belts, air bags, crash sensors, and steering wheel technologies. Some of those restraint and safety systems might find their way into the heavy machinery and large vehicles produced by Empire Southwest Machinery in Mesa, where buses and caterpillars are researched and refined. The Empire Regional Training Center offers classes in machinery management, maintenance and repair as well. The technology of golf has evolved into a thriving industry in Mesa. A sophisticated golf driving range and PING Swing Analysis Lab at Arizona State University East supports not only the golf-related majors at the college but also serves the community in perfecting its game.

Tourism:
In Mesa, it is easy to find adventure. Crammed full with excitement, the city offers visitors a collection of educational, cultural and outdoor attractions. There’s no shortage of family fun in Mesa, either. Hear the roar of dinosaurs at the Arizona Museum of Natural History, or let your imagination take flight by learning about vintage aircraft at the Commemorative Air Force Museum. Next, visit to the Arizona Museum for Youth or get in touch with nature at the nearby Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden. Mesa is also considered a golfer's paradise. With its outstanding rates and all-inclusive golf and vacation packages offered year-round, you can find a course for any skill level. With more than 40 golf courses located within a 30-minute drive of downtown Mesa, the opportunities are endless. With a selection of lively nightlife spots, Mesa offers countless ways to keep the party going well into the night.
