You need to have some basic understanding of design principles before tackling a major home improvement project. Design principles are really not as difficult to understand, as people believe.
Design is a pleasing arrangement of five elements:
- Color
- Form
- Mass
- Texture
- Line
You can use more or less of design element to create your own style. These five elements alone are not enough to complete a successful design. There are also five components of composition that designers refer to and you need to understand.
- Focal Point:
This is the visual point of reference in a room that the eye naturally returns to.
- Scale and Proportion:
Scale talks to overall size and proportions and speaks more to how the pieces fit relative to the entire room. These are very important factors when selecting furniture.
- Contrast:
Contrast is a really about taking opposites and placing them together. Contrast makes a space more interesting and gives it depth but a word of warning is needed here. Go easy on contrast, if it is overdone it can make a space look like it has no harmony.
- Harmony and Unity:
Harmony and unity blend a room together so it appears as though everything belongs.
- Variety:
Variety is indeed the spice of life. It is important to include variety in any space to make it interesting, however as with everything, too much variety can lead to a cluttered busy look.
