Moving to Nevada
Nevada - It was called the "Silver State" because of the large deposits of the mineral found and mined in the western region. Today, it's known for its great cities-two that come to mind immediately are Las Vegas and Reno, quick marriage proceedings and even quicker divorces, legalized brothels, as well as mountain ranges and deserts. As you can see there's a ton to see and do. If you are moving to Nevada, you will soon discover what keeps the Nevada moving companies so busy with the state's heavy influx of people. Ever since the state legalized gambling in the 1930s, the population increased again as Nevada became one of the tourism capitals of the world. Other than in its world-class casinos, the state has a wealth of beautiful terrain to disover like its arid deserts and the snow-topped mountains.

Population: According to the Census Bureau's estimates, Nevada's population grew by nearly a third from 2000 to 2009, from 1,998,260 to 2,643,085. Nevada is still less crowded than many other U.S. states, specifically when Las Vegas is excluded from the equation. The vast size of the state means that there's plenty of room for newcomers who are moving to Nevada.

Local Activities: Nevada is most renowned for Las Vegas, one of the few American cities where casino gambling is legal. Worldwide people love visiting the Las Vegas Strip that features the largest hotels, the grandest casinos and the biggest resorts in the world.

Even if you're not moving to Nevada for the big city life, the rest of the state has plenty to offer. Artists and art connoisseurs can enjoy the Burning Man Festival, held each year in the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach, Nevada. Sports and nature enthusiasts may also enjoy visiting the scenic desert regions near Gerlach. Nevada isn't just big cities and wide deserts; there is a Lake Tahoe that makes more than 70 miles of shoreline. Sports and nature enthusiasts of the area enjoy water activities such as climbing, skiing and hiking on the area's high mountains.

Economy: If you're relocating to Nevada to start a business, you're in luck. The Small Business Entrepreneurship Council ranked Nevada second in its 2009 Small Business Survival Index. This indicates that the state has policies and laws, which are beneficial to entrepreneurs. However, fairly note that the state's unemployment rate was the worst in the nation at 14 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. There are currently projects and efforts in the works to diversify Nevada's economy headed by the Nevada Commission on Economic Development.

State Bird: The Nevada state bird is the mountain bluebird. The males of this species can be recognized by their brilliant turquoise blue color.

State Flower: Nevada's state flower is the sagebrush. The sagebrush is a hardy bush with yellow flowers.

State Song: The Nevada state song is "Home Means Nevada."

State Nicknames: Nevada is nicknamed "The Silver State" due to the large number of silver mines that it formerly had. It is also known as the "Sagebrush State."

Nevada-Interesting Facts:
  • Nevada is known for its relaxed marriage laws, allowing for fast, easy marriages and even faster, easier divorces. Robin Williams, Barbra Streisand and Alicia Silverstone are among the celebrities who had their wedding ceremonies there.

  • Several US Navy ships have been named the USS Nevada.

  • Nevada is home to the top-secret US Air Force base nicknamed "Area 51," which plays a large part in conspiracy theories and UFO legends.

  • Ever since they backed John F. Kennedy in 1960, Nevadans have had a knack for voting for the eventual winners of presidential elections.

Nevada - Famous People:
Many celebrities have called Nevada home. The most famous of them-and arguably the group that made Las Vegas, Nevada what it is today-were Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack. Over time, the Rat Pack grew to include such great entertainers as Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and comedian Joey Bishop. Las Vegas has become a haven for entertainers who are mature in their careers and able to draw crowds; notable long-running performers on the Las Vegas strip have included Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand.
