Newark, Delaware

A bustling small city, Newark, Delaware has retained its college town charm and industrial and commercial diversity. The third largest city in the state, it is the seat of the University of Delaware. The city’s convenient location 38 miles north of Dover, 14 miles from Wilmington and less than five miles from both Maryland and Pennsylvania, makes Newark an attractive destination for those relocating to the area.

History:
Following the Revolution, the reborn Academy and the town grew slowly. In 1833, the State of Delaware granted a charter to a new institution in the town, Newark College, later renamed Delaware College. The next year, the College merged with the Academy and shortly thereafter the grammar and preparatory portion of the school was closed. The college itself shut its doors in 1858 as a result of a student fracas and the coming of the Civil War. In the meantime, the village of Newark had become a small city around the college and local crossroads market. In 1837, the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore railroad linked Newark to points north and west. In 1855, the town's first bank was established. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad came in 1886 and provided additional passenger and freight rail service to Philadelphia and points west and south. The town's population grew rapidly through the 1920's and a substantial retail market developed in conjunction with University and industrial expansion. While the Great Depression slowed economic growth, the pace of industrial and commercial development increased dramatically during World War II and the subsequent Korean conflict. In the 1950's and 1960's, Newark's development pattern closely followed the post war national economic boom. For Newark this meant that population increased from just over 11,000 in 1960 to almost 21,000 in 1970. In the 1970's and early 1980's as the national and regional economy suffered from oil price shocks, Newark's growth also stabilized. By the late 1990’s and through the early years of the new millennium, Newark renewed its commitment to preserving its downtown core through the Downtown Newark Partnership. The city’s downtown and historic building incentive programs led to renewed landowner and developer commitments downtown.

Economy:
Companies working in service industries such as health care, banking, trade and manufacturing remain Wilmington's largest employers. The Wilmington/Newark metropolitan area is home to some of the world's most prominent technology companies, including DuPont, AstraZeneca, W.L. Gore and Associates, Hercules, Inc., and Andersen Consulting. The Delaware Technology Park in Newark is host to more than 49 technology-driven businesses. Delaware is a national corporate center, and more than half of the Fortune500 charter their operations in the city because of the state's favorable corporate franchise tax laws and nationally recognized Court of Chancery. More than 60 banks are located in Wilmington. MBNA Bank is the area's largest employer with more than 11,000 workers. Chase Manhattan has invested millions of dollars in downtown offices, as have PNC, First Union, Wilmington Trust, First USA and Beneficial National Bank. Manufacturers Hanover has relocated a portion of its domestic lending operation to the city as well. Wilmington offers businesses a diverse labor force with a good mixture of blue- and white-collar workers.

Tourism:
With 25 miles of hiking trails through rolling hills of woodland, White Clay Creek Park is the perfect place to enjoy the city’s terrain. Marked hiking trails run through the park, a variety of educational programs are held year-round, and entertainment is hosted during the summer months. Next, head over to the University of Delaware. The University of Delaware Fighting Blue Hens calls Delaware Stadium home. Stadium capacity is around 25,000. As with many college football games, Delaware games feature lots of tailgating and plenty of fun. Then, check out Grassroots Handcrafts. This specialty store offers an eclectic selection of mostly handcrafted items, ranging from pottery to jewelry to wood and toys. With a great selection of pottery items from different artists from around the country, Grassroots Hanndcrefts is a treat for Delaware shoppers. Finally, Rainbow Books and Music is Newark’s version of Borders. The store offers a charming selection of music, books and specialty items unique to the area.

Colleges and Universities:
