Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio is committed to improving the quality of life by strengthening its neighborhoods, embracing the diversity of our citizens and making Cleveland a desirable and safe city in which to live, work, raise a family and grow old. With more than 30 colleges and universities, Cleveland businesses enjoy a constant flow of well-educated additions to the local workforce. Here you will find plenty of entertainment including excellent theater, professional sports teams, mind-blowing art, fresh music and distinctive culture. All in all, Cleveland is an exciting moving destination.

History:
In 1769, the capitol city plans were laid out for Cleveland. It was named Cleveland after the leader General Moses Cleveland. Lorenzo Carter, who was the city’s first resident. Soon after his arrival, a settlement sprang up and Cleveland was incorporated in December of 1814. Ohio and Erie canals were finished in 1832, linking the Great Lakes to the Ohio River. The canals made Cleveland a transportation center, as the halfway point between iron ore and raw materials from the west to the factories of the east. Cleveland quickly became a manufacturing center, home to numerous steel producers. Cleveland became the fifth largest city in the country by the 1930s, and another boom occurred during World War II when Pittsburgh's factories rolled out heaps of needed supplies. The city’s population peeked in 1949. During this time, Cleveland was named "The Best Location in America for Business." People seeking newer housing in the suburbs and a sag in heavy industry in the 1960s and 1970s caused the city to experience a population decline. The city improved by shifting to service, technology and tourist industries. Cleveland has become an exceptional example of public-private collaborating. This partnership has rejuvenated the city’s urban areas with construction of the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, the Great Lakes Science Center and the Cleveland Brown's Stadium. Cleveland has defiantly earned its nickname as "the come-back city."

Economy:
Manufacturing is the local economy’s principal sector; however, as with the nationwide trend, the services industry is emerging as a leading sector. Cleveland is home to the headquarters of 11 Fortune 500 companies. The city is also home to nearly 150 international companies from nearly 25 different countries. Manufacturing has traditionally been the dominate industry of northeast Ohio. It remains that way today; nonetheless, Cleveland’s economy has suffered along with the rest of the nation during the recession of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Nicknamed "Polymer Valley," the Cleveland area has the largest concentration of polymer companies in the United States. Some of the city’s other manufacturing companies work in such areas as the automotive industry, electrical equipment, fabricated metals and instruments and controls. The city's research base for the biomedical and biotechnology industry has tripled in recent years, with over 100 biotechnology firms situated in northeast Ohio.

Tourism:
Begin your expedition of Cleveland at the city’s well-known Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Learn more about some of world’s most famous Rock and roll acts and take a close look at some legendary musical props. For the art lover, the city boasts the second largest performing arts center in the nation named Playhouse Square – a concentrated square mile of arts and culture. And if it’s the outdoors you’re after, Cincinnati is located on the doorstep of a Great Lake, and is surrounded by emerald parks. The city is home to several major sports teams and more than 100 public golf courses. For the animal lover, visit the city’s zoo and rainforest where you can interact with the over 3,000 animals. Finally, for some quick thrills head over to the city’s award-winning amusement park, or experience on of Cleveland’s many colorful festivals.
